DNA

Picture of DNA

DNA is short for deoxyribonucleic acid. DNA is made of two coiled strands (helices) twisted together to make a twisting turning spiral – a double helix. Every one of the 46 chromosomes inside the nucleus of your cells is made of a long piece of DNA. DNA contains the genetic instructions, or genes, for making living organisms. Every time one cell becomes two, the DNA is copied first: each new cell produced contains an exact copy of the genetic material or DNA.
