Genes
Genes are instructions for making substances called proteins. Proteins produce all of the parts of living things. Some genes are instructions for what something will look like; other genes direct how it works. Many different genes work together to direct complicated features, such as the shape of your face. Genes are made up of the chemical DNA. You get your genes from your parents when you start life as one cell.
