September 2009 News and Events

Meet the Pod!

We will be running sessions for teachers to come and see the Centre of the Cell experience for themselves in September.

Sessions will cover visit logistics, risk assessments and health & safety, as well as giving you all a good chance to play the games, see the films, and get a feel for what your pupils will get from a visit.

Meet the Scientist: Prof Bart Vanhaesebroeck

'Meet the Scientist' is a programme of early evening events designed to provide the opportunity for teachers to meet leading scientists and explore cutting edge biomedical research.

Professor Vanhaesebroeck is head of the Cell Signalling centre in the Institute of Cancer, a group he founded in 2007 when he joined the university.

Picture of tissue - cells working together

Prof Vanhaesebroeck's work focusses on molecules inside cells that change the way processing pathways function. In particular, he focuses on enzymes that are involved in many, many processes within the cell, but which can also be involved in the development of cancer. He is trying to find out exactly how the involvement works, and how it can be prevented without disrupting the other pathways the enzymes are needed for.

Book now for the Autumn term

The Autumn term is now released from mid-September until December.

We will be running a morning session and an afternoon session. Teachers who book more than a week in advance will be able to receive prior notice of the name and specialism of the scientist who will be joining their visit in the Pod.

Schools in Hackney, Tower Hamlets and Newham should contact us to book their Borough's reserved slot on a Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday (respectively). Please email kat@centreofthecell.org or ring 020 7882 2564.

Public sessions

We will be running public sessions during the Autumn half-term, from Monday 26th October until Friday 20th October. Check our bookings page for session times.

Centre of the Cell welcomes its first visitors!

In June, July and August, Centre of the Cell welcomed its first ever visitors. The first groups were from local schools, and feedback from the teachers has been excellent! We have also had visits from Blizard Institute research groups and their friends and families, and from the general public during our Tower Hamlets preview sessions in August. In total, we have now seen over 500 visitors!

So far, all the comments have been extremely positive, and we'd like to say a huge thank you to everyone who came in during our Soft Opening period. It was marvelous to see you all and we hope you'll come back and see us again sometime.

New Learning Facilitators join the team

Centre of the Cell is pleased to announce that two important new members of the team started work with us in August. Liz Roche and Vik Chechi join us from Techniquest and the University of Liverpool, respectively, and will be organizing and running all your shows. Both have a strong science background as well as experience in science communication, so they'll be ideally placed to answer any questions you may have during your visit.

Welcome Vik and Liz!

The shop is open!

The Centre of the Cell shop is now open for you to purchase any souvenirs of your visit. As well as notebooks and pens, we are selling our famous Cell Trumps game at a discounted price. We will shortly start selling books in the 'Enjoy Your Cells' series, written by our Director, Professor Fran Balkwill OBE. These are not currently available outside the US. Check back here for updates.
