Cystic Fibrosis Consultant

Siobhan Carr is a Paediatric Cystic Fibrosis Consultant at Barts and The London Children’s Hospital. She is an important member of the multidisciplinary team of people who care for babies, children and young people with cystic fibrosis.

Siobhan’s working day usually starts with a ward round – visiting any cystic fibrosis patients who are staying in the hospital, checking on their health and dealing with any problems they may have. Siobhan also looks after children with other respiratory and general paediatric problems, so most days she will also see other children staying in the hospital.

Twice a week there is a cystic fibrosis outpatients clinic, where children with cystic fibrosis will see Siobhan and other members of the cystic fibrosis team for their check-ups. As well as seeing patients, Siobhan has a lot of administration work to do, especially as part of her role as Clinical Director for Paediatrics.

Siobhan knew she wanted to go into paediatric (children’s) medicine before she started training as a doctor. She worked as a doctor in the UK and Australia before returning to the UK. Before joining the Royal London Hospital, Siobhan worked at Great Ormond Street Hospital, where she specialised in respiratory conditions and cystic fibrosis.

Siobhan’s favourite part of her job is “the patient interaction side of it…there’s still a buzz from picking up problems and trying to help families with them, whether they are medical or psychosocial”.
