Medical Laboratory Scientific Officer
Medical Laboratory Scientific Officers (MLSOs), sometimes called Biomedical Scientists, help doctors and other medical professionals diagnose and treat diseases by carrying out a range of tests on tissues and body fluid samples in hospital laboratories.
Medical Laboratory Scientific Officers investigate a range of medical conditions including cancer, HIV, diabetes and cystic fibrosis. MLSOs usually specialise in a particular area, such as microbiology, haematology or chemistry.
As well as tests to diagnose diseases, MLSOs are also involved in treatments such as blood transfusions and in monitoring therapies for conditions such as diabetes.
