A bioengineered 3D human gut model to investigate the intestinal microbiome
Sean Carlson
3D intestinal models are “fake guts” made in the laboratory composed several cell types to attempt to replicate the complexity of the intestinal wall. There is a layer of gut-lining cells, that form the intestinal barrier, sitting on top of a structure containing immune cells, fibroblasts (structural cells) and a blood vessel running through the middle. The images were taken after immunofluorescent staining of the model using a confocal microscope at x20 magnification (DAPI: blue, F-actin: green, Vimentin: red).
