At first glance, this image appears playful: a Pac-Man–like figure chomping a fish. In reality, it shows fragments of cellular debris in the space between cells of the human adrenal gland. We captured this image while studying primary aldosteronism, a disease that causes high blood pressure. Taken using an electron microscope—the most powerful type of microscope available—the image reveals how even routine biological processes can echo familiar shapes and spark the imagination when viewed at the smallest scales.
