The hard palate is a keratinised masticatory subtype of the oral mucosa which is specifically designed to withstand the physical forces of chewing. The hard palate is made up of an epithelial lining which is highlighted in the image by the Krt14 stain (white) which makes up the lower basal layer of the stratified epithelium, with the Krt10+ epithelial cells (red) in the upper suprabasal layers.
