NETflix: Neutrophils Streaming Proteins Everywhere
Sonay Beyatli
Neutrophils, a type of white blood cell, are the body’s first responders to infection. When they encounter germs, they can release sticky web-like structures called Neutrophil Extracellular Traps (NETs). These nets capture and immobilize invading microbes, preventing them from spreading. At the same time, neutrophils release proteins like myeloperoxidase (MPO) and neutrophil elastase (NE) onto the NETs. Scientists can visualize these proteins to see how the neutrophils fight infection, showing the immune system’s clever strategy to trap and neutralize harmful invaders.
