The dorsal third ventricle (d3V) is part of a communicating network of cavities responsible for the production, transport and removal of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) which is crucial for protecting, nourishing, and cleaning the brain and spinal cord. The choroid plexus (red) in the middle, is the major producer of CSF. d3V is lined with other specialized cells such as specialised astrocytes (purple) that can contribute to creation of new neurons (neurogenesis), supporting the brain’s ability to repair itself after injury. Neurons (turquoise) and microglia (yellow) can be seen in the thalamic tissue, right below the d3V in both sides.
