Centre of the Cell’s Big Question Series are brought to you by top scientists at Queen Mary and beyond, in partnership with Centre of the Cell and co-created with young people from our Youth Scheme. They give audiences from age 14 the chance to hear from leaders in science and healthcare about the cutting-edge biology and innovative front-line medicine going on right here in East London.
Dr Paul Vulliamy speaks about injury response and trauma in his Big Question event.
At any point in our lives any of us might get an injury, maybe from something as simple as falling over. But what happens when that injury is potentially life changing? Researchers and Doctors are always looking for ways to improve how people respond to physical trauma, but we are starting to understand that recovery is not the same for everyone. Join Centre of the Cell as we hear from Dr. Paul Vulliamy about his research into how the body responds to injury, and how this could unlock new treatments for life-threatening trauma.
About the speaker
Paul qualified as a doctor from Newcastle University and became interested in trauma during his first job at the Royal London Hospital. He subsequently trained as a general surgeon specializing in trauma surgery. Along the way, he took time out of training for research where he studied changes in blood clotting after severe injury. In his current role, he combines clinical practice as a trauma surgeon with his academic work, which aims to understand how injury responses develop and how we can use this understanding to develop new treatments for the most severely injured patients.
