Sarah’s Journey: Cystic fibrosis
How does cystic fibrosis affect Sarah?
Sarah is 11 years old and has cystic fibrosis. She has had cystic fibrosis all of her life. Sarah inherited it from her mother and father because they both carry the cystic fibrosis gene. Having cystic fibrosis means that Sarah produces a thick, sticky mucus in some parts of her body. The mucus clogs up some of her organs, such as her lungs, pancreas and intestines.
The mucus in her lungs makes Sarah cough a lot and get chest infections. The mucus in Sarah’s intestines means that she cannot absorb food properly so she has difficulty gaining weight. Sarah often has to take time off school as her chest infections mean that she has to stay in hospital for a while.
