London’s Air Ambulance: What does it take to save the capital’s critically injured?

Twice a year we host a Big Question lecture, a talk aimed at our Youth Members and delivered by leaders in biology and medicine. Visitors hear about ground-breaking research happening here in London, and get to ask our speakers about their work.

For our Summer 2019 Big Question lecture we were joined by our friends at London’s Air Ambulance to hear an inspiring series of talks from some of the team about their lives and experiences helping save the Capital’s critically injured.

Watch the lecture below, or scroll down for profiles of our featured speakers.

Meet our speakers

Dr Flora Bird
Flora has worked with London’s Air Ambulance and Essex and Herts Air Ambulance. She has also gained experience with a number of search and rescue teams in the UK and abroad, including the RNSAR and AMREF in East Africa. She has completed research into children’s responses to immersion and swimming in cold water. Away from work Flora may be found running, swimming in cold water or playing music.

Alex Ulrich
Alex joined the London Ambulance Service in 2007 and progressed through a variety of roles before becoming an Advanced Paramedic Practitioner specialising in Critical Care in 2015. In her spare time, Alex enjoys travel and playing rugby for Cuffley Ladies RUFC, playing in the front row as a loose head prop.

John Power
As Chief Fire Officer, John is responsible for fire prevention and safety at the helipad. John has worked in aviation since 1989 and holds a fixed wing private pilot’s licence and a hot air balloon private pilot’s licence. John was a member of the Air Training Corps (ATC) 16F Wood Green and Hornsey until the age of 18, which helped him to get his foot in the door of the aviation business. He enjoys working within such a close-knit team and finds meeting ex-patients and their families very rewarding.

London’s Air Ambulance is a charity. The majority of its running costs are funded by its supporters. You can give a one-off or monthly donation online.
